Removing metadata does not hide faces, addresses or other details visible in a photo. It can remove attribution: only edit copies you are authorized to change. Do not alter original incident evidence; keep it according to your organization’s process.
How to remove EXIF data without uploading your photo
- Choose one JPEG photo. Review any supported GPS, date or camera fields found locally.
- Read the list of metadata to remove and display information to keep. If an ICC profile is present, confirm that you want to retain it.
- Create a copy. The tool rechecks its containers, image coding data, dimensions and orientation before enabling download.
Every result uses the neutral filename clean-photo.jpg. The original filename is not carried into it. Clear discards the app’s working state but does not delete original files or copies you have downloaded.
What is removed, and what remains?
The cleaner removes original EXIF containers, including GPS directories, camera details, dates and embedded EXIF thumbnails. It also removes XMP / other APP1 data, IPTC / Photoshop APP13 data, JPEG comments, other supported application segments and data after the JPEG end marker. JFIF thumbnails are removed.
A minimal orientation-only EXIF tag may remain so a portrait or mirrored image keeps its intended display. JFIF density and Adobe color-transform headers are retained. ICC color profiles are retained only with your confirmation; profiles can themselves contain metadata. This is therefore not a promise to remove every metadata byte.
JPEG coding data is copied without recompression. No downscaling or format conversion occurs. Your browser and other software may interpret color profiles differently, so check the downloaded image in the app where you will use it.
Can I remove GPS location from every image format?
This first version supports bounded, standard 8-bit grayscale or three-component JPEGs, including progressive JPEGs. It does not accept PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, PDF, CMYK or multi-picture / HDR JPEGs. Files containing APP11 segments, which may carry Content Credentials or signatures, are rejected instead of silently stripping provenance. Malformed or ambiguous files do not produce a download.
The displayed fields are a small inspection subset. No GPS value shown does not mean there is no location information elsewhere. The tool works on supported metadata containers, not on information encoded in the visible picture.
Are my photos private?
Reading, cleaning and checking run in a temporary browser worker. Photos, filenames and metadata are not uploaded, logged by the tool, placed in URLs or saved in application storage. GPS values are not sent to maps or location services. No ads or analytics scripts run here, and there is no server-upload fallback.
Clear, reload or navigation discards working state. This cannot erase copies, browser-managed session information or data held by extensions. Loading the website still sends ordinary connection information to our host; see the privacy notice.
